On Mac installing Python3 leaves Python2 intact as well. But it seems to me there is a way to change the default that is run when just "python" is typed. I came across the option once. I have chosen to leave it as is where "python --version" shows 2.7.12 and "python3 --version" shows 3.7.0.
I have been running on the Mac OS X 10.5.8 and can't seem to do any additional upgrade. That is the last version of 10.5, so unless you upgrade to 10.6 or greater, that is it for 10.5.
